Metro roundup: Rose battling Hanover for HCAC Commissioner’s Cup

Rose-Hulman holds the early lead in each of the three 2009-10 major athletic department awards presented by the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, in fall results compiled Monday.

The Engineers lead the Commissioner’s Cup standings with 53.5 points through eight sports seasons to hold a nine-point edge on second place Hanover. The Commissioner’s Cup is presented to the league school with the top combined finishes in all 19 league sports.

Rose-Hulman also holds a three-point lead after five of nine sports in the Women’s All-Sports Trophy standings. The Engineers relied on a league co-championship in soccer, a second-place finish in tennis, third-place efforts in golf and cross country and a fourth-place showing in volleyball to earn the early three-point lead over Hanover.

On the men’s side, Rose-Hulman is tied with Manchester for the Men’s All-Sports Trophy following three of 10 league sports. The Engineers earned the outright regular season championship in men’s soccer and recorded finishes of fourth in football and cross country.

Rose-Hulman has won the Men’s All-Sports Trophy for the past two years and captured the Commissioner’s Cup in 2007-08. The Engineers are in search of their first Women’s All-Sports Trophy from any conference.



Basketball

• Braves postponed — The girls high school game between Terre Haute South and Bloomington South, originally scheduled today, has been postponed for one night.

The Braves will visit the Panthers for a 6 p.m. junior varsity start on Wednesday.



• Paris 55, Marshall 47 — At Paris, Ill., the host Tigers outscored the visiting Lions 20-7 in the third quarter to break open a tight game in the girls high school season openers for both.

Callie Keys had 17 points for Paris, while Adrienne Strohm had 23 points, five steals and five assists and Shelby Sandefur 11 points for Marshall.

Kelsey Dirks had 29 points and 10 rebounds and Mychal Lowrance scored 11 for the winners.

Auto racing

• Stanbrough, Jones are winners — At Tulare, Calif., Jon Stanbrough and Levi Jones were winners Sunday in the final night of the U.S. Auto Club Pacific Coast Nationals for sprint cars at Thunderbowl Raceway.

Stanbrough led all the way to win the 40-lap feature in the final sprint car event of the season with Chad Boat second and Bud Kaeding third.

Jones was 12th as he wrapped up his third sprint car championship, finishing more than 200 points ahead of Cole Whitt.

Twelve flips were recorded in the competition with no serious injuries reported.
