Metro Roundup: Calvin College sweeps Division III regional cross country at Rose

Calvin College won both the men’s and women’s team titles in the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Men’s Cross Country Championship at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course on Saturday.

Men — Calvin College and Heidelberg (second place) were automatic qualifiers to the NCAA Divison III meet.

Individually, Calvin sophomore Nick Kramer topped a field of 248 runners with a winning 8K time of 25:45. Makorobo Salukombo from Denison led seven automatic individual qualifiers with a time of 25:53.

Other automatic qualifiers included Andy Williams of Manchester; Alan Bowsher of Ohio Northern; Kevin McCarthy of Wabash; Justin Dickman of Ohio Northern; Bryce Basista of Mount Union; and Eric Line of Oberlin.

Other teams under consideration for the NCAA Division III National Championships were the third, fourth and fifth place squads. Manchester placed third with 150 points, Mount Union finished fourth with 192, and Case Western Reserve finished fifth with 196.

If the NCAA Division III championships committee selects Manchester, Mount Union or Case Western as an at-large representative, additional runners will be added to the meet. The first additional runners from the Great Lakes Region would include Ty Griffin of Mount Union, Seth Einterz of Wabash, and Evan Hitchcock of Ohio Wesleyan.

Meet co-host Rose-Hulman placed 20th overall in the team scoring. Sophomore Tyler Kreipke led the Engineers with all-region honors and a 20th place finish in a time of 26:28. Sophomore Micah Aldrich placed 46th in 27:06, followed by Josh Elkins in a time of 28:23.

The top 35 runners in the Great Lakes Regional are eligible to receive all-region honors.

Women — Calvin College was joined by Oberlin College as an automatic team qualifier for next weekend’s national meet.

Individually, Denison University junior Katie Navarre led a pack of 231 runners to the finish line with a six-kilometer time of 21:23 at the LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course.

Navarre earned one of seven individual automatic qualifications for the NCAA Division III Championships scheduled for next Saturday at Baldwin-Wallace.

Other automatic qualifiers included Lauren Reich of DePauw, Elaine Simpson of Case Western Reserve, Alison Steinbrunner of Ohio Northern, Jillian McLaughlin of Kalamazoo, Heather Waterman of Franklin and Mary Pfeifer of Wittenberg.

Other teams under consideration for the NCAA Division III National Championships were the third, fourth and fifth place squads. Case Western Reserve placed third with 130 points, followed closely by DePauw at 150 points and Baldwin-Wallace with 157.

Meet co-host Rose-Hulman placed 25th overall in the team scoring. Senior Melissa Rogers led Rose with a 51st place finish in a time of 24:04. Freshman Creasy Clauser came home 85th in a time of 24:42.

Soccer

• Rose honored — Rose-Hulman placed seven players on the all-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference team, including its fourth straight league Player of the Year award and second straight Coach of the Year honor, in results released Thursday by the conference office.

Senior Rhys Evans was named HCAC Most Valuable Player for the second consecutive year, making Evans the first player in Rose history to earn two league MVP awards in the sport of soccer.

Coach Sean Helliwell was also honored as league Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season. Helliwell (26-11-4) and holds the school record winning percentage at .683, becomes the first men’s soccer coach in program history to earn two Coach of the Year awards.

Other first-team honorees included junior Corbin Clow, senior Cameron Hazel and sophomore Clint Vatterrodt.

Second-team award winners were sophomore Tim Hollingshead, junior Mitchell Ishmael and junior Eric Myers.

High school awards

• Knights honored — Northview High School honored its fall sports athletes recently.

The Knights won Western Indiana Conference championships in football, volleyball, boys tennis and girls golf and were sectional champions in volleyball and tennis. Both cross country teams and the girls golf team were also regional qualifiers.

Jessi Moore of the girls soccer team was honored for being a first-team selection on the all-state academic team.
