College Roundup: South grad Tessa Johnson goes for 27 points for Lincoln Trail

The Tribune-Star

Lincoln Trail’s women’s basketball team defeated Shawnee Community College 89-50 on Saturday behind the hot shooting of Terre Haute South graduate Tessa Johnson.

Johnson hit 10 of 11 field goal attempts, 7 of 8 from behind the 3-point line, for 27 points as the Statesmen improved to 2-0.

Lincoln Trail is currently ranked 16th in the country. On Nov. 17, the Statesmen travel to play Vincennes University — ranked 13th — in a game that will pit Johnson against her former South teammates Megan Craft and Randa Rector.

No. 25 UNI drops ISU in three

Indiana State lost to 25th-ranked Northern Iowa 25-14, 25-15, 25-21 in Missouri Valley Conference volleyball Saturday night.

The Sycamores, now 7-22 overall and 3-12 in the MVC, have their final road match of the 2009 season Thursday at Illinois State. Northern Iowa, winners of a school-record 22 straight matches, is now 24-2 overall and 14-0 in the MVC.

Ana Maira Charun had 10 kills for ISU, while Stacy Qualizza added six and Morgan Dall five. Whitney Fromm had a double-double with 25 assists and 10 digs.

Kiya James had 14 digs to give her 470 for the season, fourth place on the ISU single-season list. Her second dig Saturday enabled her to pass Cheryl Berg, who had 457 during the 1999 season.

Northern Iowa scored five straight points for a 7-3 lead in the first set. ISU was still within 12-9 when the Panthers finished the set on a 13-5 run.

UNI pulled away from a 6-6 tie in the second set with three straight points and pulled away, but ISU was still within 21-20 in the third set before the host team ended the match.

Indiana State came out in the third set determined to get a win against the Panthers and that determined effort nearly paid dividends as the set was tied 14 times with seven lead changes.

The Sycamores stayed within striking distance with a Charun kill bringing Indiana State within one point, 21-20, late in the set. Northern Iowa surged back in front 24-20.
