Metro Roundup: St. Mary-of-the-Woods drops two at hoops tournament

Grand Rapids, Mich. — St. Mary-of-the-Woods lost its first two college basketball games of the season during the weekend, falling to host Cornerstone and also to Robert Morris (Ill.) in the Cornerstone Classic.

Abby McKee led the Pomeroys in scoring and rebounding in both games, getting 11 points and eight boards in a 93-38 loss Friday night to Cornerstone and 22 points and 16 rebounds in Saturday’s 81-65 loss to Robert Morris.

Northview graduate Jennifer Gregg added 14 points in Saturday’s game, while Brooke Brown and Katie Nease scored 10 each in that game. SMWC is without freshman guard Lexee Hayes, who is recovering from an ankle injury.

• Boilers win exhibition — At West Lafayette, Purdue’s women defeated the Indiana Lady Stars 77-54 Sunday in an exhibition game.

Danielle Campbell had 23 points and 11 rebounds for the Boilermakers, while Lakisha Freeman scored 19 and Natasha Bogdanova 13.

Former Indiana State player Amy Amstutz-Watson had five points for the Stars.

Auto racing

• Kaeding prevails — At Perris, Calif., Bud Kaeding led just one lap but it was enough for him to win the main event in U.S. Auto Club sprint car racing Saturday at Perris Auto Speedway.

Kaeding outdueled Casey Shuman in the 40-lap feature that concluded three days of racing in the Budweiser Oval Nationals. Shuman was in front for 11 laps after Tim Kaeding led for 21 at the start of the main.

Shuman took second with Brady Bacon third and Jesse Hockett fourth.

Four flips marred the action with Dave Darland flipped before the B-main and Jon Stanbrough and Robert Ballou flipping in that race. No serious injuries were reported.

Levi Jones finished 16th and has an 89-point lead over Darren Hagen in the sprint totals going into the Western World Championships this week.

Volleyball

• Sycamores routed — At Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Indiana State lost three one-sided games in Missouri Valley Conference play late Saturday, falling 30-13, 30-15, 30-20 to Northern Iowa.

Kelly Whitaker had nine of ISU’s 28 kills for the match, while Alisha Polite had 12 assists and Whitney Fromm 11. Kristy Cox had nine digs, Fromm eight and Whitaker six.

Now 3-20 overall and 0-15 in the MVC, Indiana State plays at Illinois State on Thursday.

• Burris wins again — At Muncie, Muncie Burris was one of the winners in the Indiana High School Athletic Association volleyball tournament concluded Saturday at Ball State.

Burris bested Fairfield in the semis of the Class 2A action and defeated Brownstown Central in three games in the finals for its 11th consecutive championship and 19th overall.

Michigan City Marquette won its fourth straight Class A title. First-time winners were New Castle in 4A and Bellmont in 3A.

Soccer

• U12 girls second — At Avon, the Terre Haute Flyers U12A girls finished runner-up in their division at the Fusion Fall Festival.

On Saturday, the girls defeated Warsaw Wave 1-0 and the Avon Fusion 2-0. Kelsey Thomas scored all three goals.

On Sunday, the Lady Flyers defeated Westside United 1-0 off a goal by Kathryn Ruark, but then lost the championship game to Cincinnati West Cobras 2-1. Ruark scored off a corner kick by Elise Welch.

Goalkeepers for the weekend were Mandee Eberle, Ruark and Thomas. Other team members were Brianna Burgess, Madeline Kerr, Miranda Lucas, Michaela Rollings, Mallory Sanders, Katie Schmidt, Emily Stephanian, Kaleigh Sutliff and Shannon Welch. Jim Welch was the coach.
