Metro Roundup: Home crowd helps ISU volleyball defeat SIU-E

The Indiana State volleyball team needed a lift from the home crowd Tuesday night and they got it as the Sycamores fought off a determined SIU-Edwardsville team for a 3-1 victory in the ISU Arena.
Jodi Whitaker closed out the match with consecutive kills, giving the Sycamores a 26-24 win in the fourth game. ISU took the first game 25-22 and the second 25-23 before SIU-E won the third game 25-21.
Jodi Stoker had 16 kills to lead the Sycamore offense, while Whitaker and Stacy Qualizza added 15 kills each.
ISU’s Whitney Fromm had 52 set assists and the backcourt was led by Kristy Cox with
20 digs.
Indiana State (7-11) will swing back into Missouri Valley Conference action Friday when its plays host to the Drake Bulldogs.
In other volleyball Tuesday:
Rose wins — In the Rose-Hulman Sports and Recreation Center, the host Engineers improved to 2-0 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play with a five-set victory over Franklin College.
Rose captured the match victory by a 25-20, 23-25, 25-22, 18-25, 15-11 margin.
Prior to the match, more than 25 members of the Wabash Valley Cancer Survivors Organization were honored. All proceeds from the match and T-shirt sales were donated to the organization.
Sophomore Amanda Jevons smashed 13 kills at a .297 percentage to lead the Engineer offense. Senior Katie Tharp added 10 kills, 16 digs, two solo blocks and four block assists, with senior Sarah Messmer contributing nine kills and six block assists.
Freshman Morgan Williams provided support with four blocks and sophomore Sam Gregory tallied 15 digs. Freshman Leah Pelzel had a career-high 39 assists with three kills in the effort.
Rose-Hulman improved to 14-8 overall, while Franklin dropped to 2-18 overall and 0-4 in conference matches. The Engineers will compete in the Earlham College Tri-Match on Saturday.
Soccer
Flyers win twice — The U14 Terre Haute Lady Flyers finished out their regular season at home over the weekend with a pair of wins over Center Grove and Zionsville.
On Saturday, the Flyers defeated Center Grove 5-1. Scoring goals for the Flyers were Nicole Mikoljaczyk (two), Courtney Hubbard, Emilee Pemberton and Merit Bell. Providing assists on Saturday’s goals were Jaime McKee and Mikoljaczyk.
On Sunday, the Flyers slipped past Zionsville 3-1. Morgan Strahm, Pemberton and Mikoljaczyk had one goal each. Annie Mullican was credited with an assist on Mikoljaczyk’s goal. Kelli Buchanan and Jaime McKee combined in goal for the weekend.
The Flyers will travel to Indianapolis to compete in the Fusion Fall Festival tournament Nov. 1-2.
