Metro Roundup: Darren Hagen wins Clabber Girl Hut 100 at Action Track

TERRE HAUTE — Darren Hagen recaptured the lead on the 82nd lap and kept it the rest of the way late Saturday night to win the Clabber Girl Hut Hundred presented by First Financial Bank and the Terre Haute Convention & Visitors Brueau at the Terre Haute Action Track.

Hagen, the night’s third-fastest qualifier, had the lead for more than half the race and was running with the leaders all the way. He surrendered first place to fast qualifier Cole Carter early and was behind Adam Clarke from the 63rd through the 81st circuits of the U.S. Auto Club midget event.

Lynsey Tilton caused a stoppage on the 19th lap when she hit the first-turn wall, and Josh Wise flipped on the 32nd lap. Jon Stanbrough then flipped on the second restart.

Shane Cottle was runner-up, with Davey Ray, Michael Pickens and Dave Darland rounding out the top five. Darland made it back to fifth place after an early mishap that forced him to the rear of the field.

Jerry Coons Jr., who was in the 34th position as a provisional starter after first-heat problems, finished 12th to protect his lead in the midget standings. Darland moved within 37 points of Coons in second place and seventh-place finisher Jay Drake is four behind Darland.

Bryan Clauson, the 16-year-old phenom who entered the weekend in second place, is still just 10 points behind Darland and six in back of Drake despite missing Saturday’s action; he was involved in a wreck Friday night at Wheatland, Mo.

Next national USAC events are the two-day extravaganza Friday and Saturday at the Iowa Speedway. The Action Track is host for its own two-day show Oct. 6-7, with the rescheduled Tony Hulman Classic to be run on Oct. 7.

--Sycamores fall in OT — At Richmond, Ky., some missed offensive opportunities cost visiting Indiana State a 2-1 overtime loss to Eastern Kentucky in women’s play Sunday.

“We are not finishing and scoring the goals that we create for ourselves,” Coach Vernon Croft said after his team’s fourth one-goal loss of the season.

Eastern Kentucky scored in the ninth minute and maintained a 1-0 lead at intermission.

Erin Bianchi scored the tying goal in the 59th minute on a pass from Amanda Gogel, and Indiana State ended regulation play with the advantage in shots (10-9) and corner kicks (6-1). Eastern then scored the winning goal in the 98th minute.

Indiana State, 1-4, has a 4 p.m. home match Friday against Toledo. Eastern Kentucky is 2-4.

--First losses for both Engineer teams — At Rose-Hulman, both the Engineer women and the Rose-Hulman men suffered their first losses of the season to Wittenberg at Jim Rendel Field on Sunday.

Wittenberg’s women prevailed 2-0, scoring twice in the second half. The Rose-Hulman defense allowed just two shots in the first period, but goalkeeper Rachel Miller had to face 10 in the last 45 minutes.

Rose-Hulman is now 3-1 and plays its Heartland Conference opener at noon Saturday against visiting Defiance. Wittenberg is 2-2.

In men’s competition, the Engineers had a 2-1 lead after the first 11 minutes. Chris Banner scored on a corner kick in the fifth minute, but the visitors tied the score in the ninth minute. Then Matt Trowbridge took advantage of a mistake by the Wittenberg keeper and scored, and the home team still led at halftime.

Wittenberg scored its tying and winning goals in the first 15 minutes of the second period, improving to 3-2 for the year.

Rose-Hulman men, 3-1-1, also meet Defiance at 2 p.m. Saturday.

--Wildcats top Vikings — At West Vigo, Kelsi Cheesewright scored three goals to help visiting South Vermillion win a 6-2 Western Indiana Conference girls high school match on Saturday.

--Flyers U14 boys win twice — At Wabash Valley Fairgrounds, the Terre Haute Flyers U14 boys team improved to 4-1 after defeating the Seymour Cyclones 10-0 on Saturday. On Sunday, the same team beat the Center Grove Rush 2-0.

Goalkeepers Spencer Ooley-Viray and Adam Shamsae haven’t allowed a goal in the last four matches for the Flyers, 5-1. They host the undefeated Putnamville Panthers next Sunday.

--Lawrenceville 19, Martinsville 14 — At Martinsville, Ill., the host Bluestreaks had a 7-0 halftime lead before losing for the third straight time in Little Illini Conference high school play Friday night.

Matt Higginbotham rushed for 70 yards and a touchdown, Jared Truelove also had a touchdown and Ethan Nash and Jacob Hildebrandt had 11 tackles each for Martinsville, 0-3 overall and in conference play. Hildebrandt also had an interception.

Martinsville plays at Oblong and Lawrenceville, 1-2 and 1-2, has a home game against Palestine-Hutsonville on Friday.
