ISU volleyball improves to 4-3

staff report The Indiana State volleyball team came back from a two-set deficit to win one match Friday, but the Sycamores couldn’t pull off a second comeback against Iona.

Against Troy, the Sycamores lost the first two sets 22-25 and 18-25 but fought back to take the next three sets 25-17, 25-20, 15-7.

“This was a pretty good win for us,” Indiana State coach Traci Dahl said. “After losing the first two sets, I just told them that they really need to get their act together and play like they are capable of. I guess they got the message.”

Junior Kelli Whitaker had 17 kills and a .277 hitting percentage in the first match to pace the Sycamores to the victory. Junior Whitney Fromm had 52 assists and 11 digs while junior Jodi Stoker had 16 kills and junior Sarah Agnich had 10 kills. Senior Kristy Cox had 21 digs and six service aces in the match.

In the loss to Iona, Fromm set a career high with 61 assists. Junior Jodi Stoker led Indiana State in kills with 23 while junior Kelli Whitaker had 18 and junior Sarah Agnich 12.

It was the first time this season that the Sycamores have dropped a five-set match after defeating Lipscomb and Western Illinois at the Morehead State Invitational last weekend.

The Sycamores (4-3) play two more matches today, taking on Memphis at 12:30 and IUPUI at 5:30.



In other college volleyball:

• Rose wins — At Richmond, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology volleyball team improved to 3-3 on the season with a four-game victory over Wilmington College and a three-game win over Earlham College on Friday.

The Engineers topped Wilmington by a score of 18-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-15. Rose-Hulman then defeated the host Quakers by a 25-19, 25-21, 25-20 score in the nightcap.

The Engineers stand 3-3 on the season and return to action on Saturday with matchups against Huntingdon and Northwestern Ohio.
