Metro Roundup: Ridgway nets 4 goals in Rose women’s soccer victory

Rose-Hulman relied on a school record four goals by senior Liz Ridgway to earn a come from behind 5-4 victory over Earlham College in a women’s college soccer match Wednesday at Rose’s Intramural Field.
Ridgway became the first player in school history to score four times in a game, snapping the previous mark of three scores that has happened 13 times. Her effort included the final three goals of the match to turn a 4-2 deficit into the 5-4 victory.
In the nightcap — a match beginning over three hours late — new head coach Sean Helliwell earned his first college men's victory as head coach as the Engineers topped Earlham College 1-0.
Isaac Heyveld recorded the shutout in goal, tallying seven saves, while Paul Bouagnon provided the offensive punch, scoring on a cross from Corbin Clow that was deflected by Clint Vatterrodtat the 61:20 mark.
The Rose women (2-1) and men (1-2) travel to face Kalamazoo College on Saturday and Finlandia on Sunday in non-conference action.
Golf
• President’s Cup — At the Country Club of Terre Haute, the following are results of the President’s Cup completed Wednesday:
139 — Tom Cummins.
140 — Bill Grimes.
141 — Fred Barth.
143 — Jeff Lewellyn, Juan Correa, John White.
Skill awards
Day one — Lewellyn (3, 10), Cummins (7, 13), Grimes (16).
Day two — Jimm Nidlinger (3), Grimes (7), Ron Luttrell (10), Charlie Williams (13), Bob Prox III (16).
• Griffing wins — At Carmel, Quinn won the Indiana Senior PGA championship concluded Thursday at the Woodland Country Club.
Griffng defeated Cary Hungate in a playoff after each shot 5-under-par 139s in the two-day event.
Three players tied for third at 142 and two shot 143.
Idle Creek pro Ray Goddard had rounds of 80 and 79 for 159 to finish sixth among super seniors in the field.
Baseball
• Riley players honored — Seventeen players from the Riley Recreation League were named to Southwest Indiana All-State baseball teams by Southern Indiana Babe Ruth Baseball recently.
Selections were chosen based on players’ performance on the field as well as sportsmanship and team attitude.
These players and their families have been invited to Bloomington Oct. 4-5 for an awards banquet and exhibition game between the Southeast and Southwest All-Stars at Winslow Park.
