Indiana State junior Breanne Smith reached the quarterfinals of the Pacific Northwest Amateur Championship earlier this month at the Meadow Springs Country Club in Richland, Wash.
Smith carded rounds of 74 and 75 during the qualifying portion of the event to finish in a tie for fourth place in a field of 45.
Of the 32 finalists, Smith defeated Molly Boyle, a junior at Washington, 5 and 3 and Sara Natwick, a senior at Oregon State, 6 and 5. Smith was eliminated in the quarterfinals by eventual champion Cyna Rodriquez of the Phillippines 2 and 1.
Earlier this summer, Smith also reached the quarterfinals of the 99th Women’s Oregon Amateur Championship.

n Area golfers excel — The following Wabash Valley-connected athletes performed well in junior tournaments this week.
• At Scottsburg, Nathan Pirtle of Sullivan shot a round of 74 to win the boys 12 title in a Prep Tournament at the Westwood Golf Course on Wednesday.
• At Plymouth, Kaelyn Lingenfelter of Rochester, daughter of former Terre Haute South standout Lyle Lingenfelter, shot a 75 to win the girls 15-16 division of the Mountain Dew Tour at Plymouth Country Club on Thursday.
• At Michigan City, Thomas Goss of Terre Haute fired a 75 to claim third place on the Mountain Dew Tour at Michigan City Golf Course on Thursday.
• At Marion, Brandon Bekkering of Clinton also shot a 75 to win the boys 15-16 division on the Mountain Dew Tour at Shady Hill Golf Club on Thursday.
Track and field
• Welker fifth in nation — At Omaha, Neb., Rachel Welker, an incoming freshman at Terre Haute North, placed fifth nationally in the Youth 13-14 division at the U.S. Track and Field Junior Olympics on Thursday.
Welker’s jump was nine-feet, 10-inches, a personal best.
Softball
• Northview pair selected — At Hartford City, Northview standouts Traci Sanders and Erica Conrad will be playing in the first annual East/West All-Star doubleheader at Blackford High School starting at noon on Saturday.
• Rock n Jock — The second annual Rock n Jock Tournament will be at Spencer Field starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
The five participating teams are DeHart’s Rental, Clabber Girl and Outkast of Terre Haute, plus Lewis Rentals of Vincennes and Whittmer Bros. of Washington.

Volleyball
• ISU Alumni match set — Indiana State and first-year coach Traci Dahl will welcome back several former players for the annual Alumni Match in the ISU Arena on at 2 p.m. on Aug. 23.
Eight former Sycamores have already agreed to play against the 2008 team, including Amy Wright (1993-94), Kristin Widmar (2001-04), Kylee Osborne (2000-03), Tessa Wolf (2002-05), Sarah Smith (2002-05), Kerri Byrum (2002-04), Kelly Spisak (2000004) and Katie Freeman (2002-05).
A reception will follow in Dede III of the Hulman Memorial Student Union. Admission is $10.
Basketball
• Hux Oil Hauteans take third — The 17-and-under Hux Oil Hauteans finished 3rd out of 32 girls teams in the Louisville Derby Classic AAU tournament.
Lynsey Butler and Francesca McCarthy both of Terre Haute North helped the Hauteans to a 4-1 record this past week. Other team members include Stephanie Harper, Nicole Tipsworth, Hilary Fox, Spring Raines, Stormi Raines and Brenna Siscoe.
