Clay County Babe Ruth 14s shine in tournament

Tribune-Star Correspondent

Evansville Clay County’s 14-year-old baseball all-stars finished second out of seven teams after completing five days of grueling action in the Babe Ruth Southwest State tournament Tuesday.

Clay County results

Friday — Clay County rallied to defeat Jasper 6-5 as Zach Hull hit a two-run homer and Coleman Craig blasted a three-run bomb during a five-run seventh inning. The winning pitcher was T.J. Decker.

Saturday — The Clay Countians routed Brown County 20-8 in five innings. Craig hit another three-run homer and earned the pitching victory.

Sunday — They lost to South Gibson 6-3 as Decker received the pitching loss.

Monday — Clay County bounced back to eliminate Evansville 11-4. Craig picked up the pitching victory.

Tuesday — Clay County lost a 6-5 heartbreaker as South Gibson claimed the Southwest State title. Bryant Pestoff homered for Clay County, but South Gibson tallied two runs with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the game. Craig was the losing pitcher.

Next — South Gibson will advance to the state tournament, which begins Saturday at Shelbyville.

Track

• Roads earns academic award — University of Southern Indiana senior Rob Roads was named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic men’s track and field team.

Roads, a five-time Academic All-GLVC performer in cross country and track, was one of 108 NCAA Division II student-athletes to earn the award after a solid outdoor season. Roads is a graduate of Terre Haute North High School.

Roads, who owns a 3.631 GPA in physical education, recorded a Division II provisional qualifying time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase during the outdoor season. He was fifth in the steeplechase and 13th in the 5,000 meters at the GLVC outdoor championships.
