Metro Roundup: Wayne Newton finishes regular season on sour note

Evansville —
Columbia, Tenn., defeated Wayne Newton Post 346 9-4 in the third-place game of the Romain Cross Pointe Invitational American Legion baseball tournament on Sunday.
Post 346 (25-12) concluded its regular season and will be host team of the American Legion sectional at North High School’s diamond.
They will open post-season play vs. Vincennes at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Basketball
• Terre Haute trio enjoying success — The high school trio of Dragana Grbic and Tessa Johnson, both seniors-to-be at Terre Haute South, and Kelly Meggs, a junior-to-be at Terre Haute North, have continued to contribute to the success of the Indiana Elite Central girls 17-and-under AAU team out of Indianapolis.
Indiana Elite Central is now 37-0 for the summer after winning six games in its 32-team bracket in a tournament July 12-14 at Chicago.
The weekend before, the team won all five of its games in a tournament at Fishers.

• Casey wins tournament — At Casey, Ill., Casey completed a perfect 3-0 record by defeating Salt Fork 28-22 in the championship of the eight-team Casey 7-on-7 football tournament over the weekend.

Auto racing
• Jones, Scheurenberg win — At Haubstadt, Hunter Scheurenberg and Levi Jones were winners Saturday in the final race of Indiana Sprint Week at Tri-State Speedway.
Scheurenberg led the final 26 laps to win the 30-lap feature. Jones took second and won his second Sprint Week title. He also won in 2004.
Jones finished eight points ahead of Dave Darland in the seven-race event and will take a 50-point lead over Jerry Coons Jr. in the USAC sprint totals into an August 3 race at Salem Speedway.

• Siscoe prevails — At Paragon, Jon Siscoe won the Mike Johnson Memorial for sprint cars Saturday at Paragon Speedway.
Chase Stockon won the feature a year ago and led the first 26 laps in going for a repeat, battling Siscoe and Danny Holtsclaw up front.
After slipping to third, he passed Holtsclaw on the last corner and was challenging Siscoe for the lead at the finish of the barn burner.
Siscoe, Holtsclaw and Stockon all won heat races with 50 cars at the track.

• Gaines wins — At Putnamville, Dickie Gaines took a break from Indiana Sprint Week action to win a feature
at Lincoln Park Speedway
on Saturday.
Gaines had warmed up by winning a feature at the Putnam County track and won his heat and feature on Saturday. Billy Puterbaugh was second and Shane Hollingsworth third.
Kenny Carmichael was 10th in the sprint main and took second in the feature for UMP modifieds won by Ray Humphrey. Kenny Carmichael Jr. took eighth in the sprint main and was third in the feature for super stocks.
Joe Whisler took first in the feature for super stocks and Lloyd Walls was the winner in the annual bus dash.
There is no racing at the track this week. The 21st annual Putnamville Clash is Aug. 2.
