Consistent Phillip Myers wins Country Club championship

By Tom Reck
Tribune-Star Correspondent

TERRE HAUTE Consistency was the name of Phillip Myers’ golf game for three days as he won the Country Club of Terre Haute championship for the first time.

The recent Terre Haute South graduate opened play on the Allendale course with a 2-under-par 69 and finished the event Saturday with the same score. He had a 74 in the second round and finished with a 1-under-par 213 score.

Dick Vining took second with 222 and 2007 champ Dave Callahan was third at 223.

Myers went 33-36 in his final round. He started the day with a two-shot lead over Callahan.

“My ball striking was strong. I hit a lot of greens … I missed 10 in the three rounds,” said Myers.

In his senior season at South, he was No. 1 player most of the year and was medalist for the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference and the regional at Country Oaks.

He is currently ranked ninth on the boys Masters Tour and is a member of the Indiana team that will meet players from Kentucky before he reports for freshman orientation at Purdue in August.

Gary Hosking shot 226 to win the first flight while John Lukens won the third flight with 240 and Tom Tucker the third flight with 265.

The senior club championship is scheduled for August 2-3 and the junior interclub will be played at the course August 1.

Thomas Goss had the second-low score of the day Saturday, shooting 71 as he completed a run of eight straight days in a tournament.

He edged Zach Hosking by one shot to win the boys 15-17 title in the city junior tournament on Thursday.

Goss will be a sophomore at South and qualified for the Boys State competition in August by shooting 77 at Harrison Hills at Attica on Friday where more than 80 players competed for spots in the tournament.

Hosking shot 79 and is first alternate for the state event which will be a combination of stroke and match play.
