METRO ROUNDUP: Riley 11s win Cal Ripken Southern Indiana title

Riley’s 11-year-old baseball all-stars made a third game unnecessary Saturday by defeating Floyds Knobs twice in a best-of-three series for the Cal Ripken Southern Indiana combined state championship.

Riley earned a 13-10 victory in the opener as winning pitcher Mitchell Clinkenbeard hit a home run.

In the second game, Riley won 14-3. Conner Shipley was the winning pitcher.

Riley will advance to the 10-team Ohio Valley Regional, which starts Thursday at Kokomo.

Tennis

n Mixed doubles — At Rea Park, 50 players competed in the Children’s Museum-Terre Haute Tennis Club Flighted Mixed Doubles Tournament on Saturday at Rea Park.

Tournament proceeds are donated to the Children’s Museum of Terre Haute.

n ISU scramble — At Idle Creek Course, the Indiana State University Varsity Club Scramble produced plenty of winners Saturday.

Claiming first place in the gross division with a 56 was the foursome of Dave Patterson, Sam Lee, Tom Lee and Andy McAleese.

Winning the net division with a 61 was the team of John Blickenstaff, Keith Dunklebanger, Jerry Obleness and Jerry White.

n Riley 12U runner-up — At Newburgh, the Riley 12U team finished second in Cal Ripken Southwest State Tournament recently.

Riley defeated Greene County and Clay County before being beaten by Newburgh to drop into the losers’ bracket, then eliminated Clay County to reach the championship round.

Riley defeated Newburgh in the first game to force a second and deciding title game, but Newburgh won this game and the tournament.

Auto racing

n Coons wins again — At Bloomington Speedway, Jerry Coons Jr. came back from a flip in the third heat Friday to win another Indiana Sprint Week feature race.

Bryan Clauson and Shane Cottle traded the lead in the feature until Clauson ran into problems. Coons took the lead on the 24th lap and led the rest of the way in the 30-lapper. Levi Jones took second and Dave Darland was third.

Darland held a six-point lead over Coons and was nine up on Jones going into Saturday’s last race in the U.S. Auto Club series. Jones had a 24-point lead on Coons in the sprint car totals.

Two USAC Silver Crown races are slated this week — at Terre Haute on Wednesday and at O’Reilly Raceway Park the next night.
