Metro Roundup: Riley takes 11-year-old championship

Tribune-Star staff report

Newburgh Riley rolled past Newburgh 13-1 in the “if necessary” championship game to claim the Cal Ripken 11-year-old Southwest State Tournament on Tuesday.

After winning its first three games in the double-elimination tournament, Riley failed to hold a late 5-3 lead, losing to Newburgh 6-5 in the first championship game on Tuesday.

But Riley recovered quickly, lighting up Newburgh with seven runs in the first inning, then adding six tallies in the fourth inning of the nightcap — shortened to four innings by the 10-run rule — to win the tournament.

Spence Tofaute led the Riley offensive attack with four singles and a double on Tuesday, while pitcher Nathan Will notched his third victory in the tournament. Eleven different Riley players scored at least one run in the championship game.

Riley will oppose Floyd’s Knobs in the best-of-three Cal Ripken Southern Indiana Championship on Saturday. The first game is set for 1 p.m., with the second game to follow. If a third game is necessary, it would be played Sunday at a time to be announced.
