Metro Roundup: Wayne Newton wins twice, advances to tournament final four

Bowling Green, Ky. —
Wayne Newton Post 346 won a pair of games in the “Fireworks on the Hill” tournament, topping Oldham County (Ky.) 7-2 and Murfreesboro (Tenn.) 12-3 in American Legion baseball action on Saturday.
Post 346 advanced to the final four of the now single-elimination tournament, playing at 9 a.m. today. If they win, they would play in the championship game at 2:30 p.m.
In the first game, Post 346 was led by Koby Kraemer going 4 for 4 with a triple and two RBIs. Joe Meggs and Brandon Dorsett also had a pair of hits apiece. In the nightcap, Bryan Chestnut, Devin Peabody and Justin Ferrell each had two hits.

Terre Town hosts PONY regionals — Terre Town baseball will host a PONY-sanctioned regional tournament for the 10U and 12U age groups from July 23-27. Teams will be coming from as far as Lexington, Ky. Winners advance to the Zone Tournament in Joliet, Ill.
Junior Post 346 plays today — Wayne Newton Post 346 Junior Legion team added a slate of games to its schedule today. A total of four games, three involving Post 346, will be played at Terre Haute South beginning at 11 a.m.

Golf
Open play slated — At Carmel, play in the Indiana Open begins Monday at Prairie View Golf Club.
The field will be pared to the low 60 following Tuesday’s round.
Jasper pro Jeff Sanders won with a birdie on the first playoff hole last year and is in the field again. Recent Indiana Amateur champ Chris Baker is one of the qualifiers.
Terre Haute golfers in the field are Rich Schelsky, Travis Turpen, Kyle Miller and Phillip Myers. Others include former Greencastle standout Ryan Burchette, former Linton and Franklin College ace Tim Fish, former Hoosier Hills assistant Brett Melton, and Zac Treash, who has relatives in Brazil.
Hole-in-one — At Hulman Links, Jerry Sears got his first career ace on Tuesday, using a 5-hybrid on the 180-yard 13th hole.
Auto racing
Another rainout — At Bloomington, racing again was called Friday due to rain.
United Midget Racing Association racing will be featured this week along with modifieds and super stocks and fireworks.
An Indiana Sprint Week feature is slated for July 18.
Sprint Week set — Eight days of U.S. Auto Club sprint car racing begins Wednesday at Lawrenceburg Speedway.
Two nights of racing are set for Lawrenceburg followed by two nights at I-69 Speedway at Gas City and Sunday at Kokomo Speedway. ISW will conclude with races at Kamp Motor Speedway at Boswell on July 17, Bloomington Speedway on July 18 and Tri-State Speedway at Haubstadt on July 19.
Two-time champ Cory Kruseman is coming from California to compete in the series and will vie for honors against the likes of 2008 sprint points leader Levi Jones, three-time champ Dave Darland, 2007 champ Jon Stanbrough and Tracy Hines, leader in the midget and Silver Crown totals.
Silver Crown action resumes in Terre Haute later this month with the Sumar Classic.
