Metro Roundup: District Cal Ripken title on line today

Tribune-Star staff report

July 06, 2009 12:07 am

Two teams from Clay County and two from the host league will battle at 6 p.m. today at Riley for district Cal Ripken League baseball championships.
Clay County’s 10-year-olds are unbeaten in three games, but none of those was against the Riley Smodilla team that Clay County plays today. The Riley Smodilla team avenged its only tournament loss to Parke County in Sunday’s last game to reach the championship round.
Riley Flack is the unbeaten team in the tournament for 11-year-olds and plays a Clay County team it defeated 3-1 in an earlier round. Clay County reached tonight’s championship round with a pair of wins over Linton.
Because both tournaments are double-elimination affairs, a second game would be played tonight if either Riley Smodilla or the Clay County 11-year-olds win at 6.
