Metro Roundup: Wayne Newton notches tournament wins

MOLINE, ILL. Wayne Newton Post 346 got off to a 2-0 start at the Moline Invitational for American Legion Baseball.

Post 346 won game one against East Moline 7-0. Shawn Walker earned the shutout victory as Jacob Hayes went 2-for-3 with a triple, while A.J. Reed added a double and a pair of RBIs.

Post 346 prevailed 8-4 over St. Charles, Ill. in its nightcap. Dougie Collett had a home run and two RBIs. Zac Niehaus was 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs, while Reed had a double and a RBI. He also improved to 3-1 on the season with a victory on the mound.

Post 346 (19-6) will play Northbrook and Peoria Limestone in day two of the tournament today.

Golf

• Ace for Grimes — At Country Club of Terre Haute, Bill Grimes recorded his first career hole-in-one on the 100-yard No. 16 hole using a sand wedge on Friday.

Witnesses were Steve Price, Dan Callahan, Dave Callahan and John Lukens.

Auto racing

• Hines prevails — At Winchester, Tracy Hines won the feature event in Thursday Night Thunder U. S. Auto Club sprint car racing at Winchester Speedway.

Hines was fast qualifier and overtook Cole Whitt on the 37th lap and led the rest of the way to win the 40-lap main with Whitt second and Bobby East third.

Levi Jones was sixth and took a 10-point lead over Dave Darland in the sprint totals into Friday’s racing at Toledo.
