An eight-run sixth inning in what proved to be its last offensive inning of the first game helped propel Wayne Newton Post 346 to a sweep of an American Legion baseball doubleheader over visiting Lafayette Post 11 on Sunday at Terre Haute North High School.
Post 346 won the opener 9-6, then won the second game 8-1 as Jordan Stone pitched a four-hitter.
Lafayette had a 6-1 lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning of the first game, but Wayne Newton pitcher Cole Vicars was about to get revenge.
After a walk to Andrew Woodason and a single by Bryan Chestnut, Jeremy Lucas hit a two-run double to cut the lead to 6-3. After one out, another run scored in a sequence that included Devin Peabody being hit by a pitch, Koby Kraemer walking and Zach Odum reaching on a bunt single. Then Vicars provided the next four runs with a grand-slam homer, and Jordan Shaw-Tyler followed with a solo shot.
Shaw-Tyler didnt quite hit for the cycle for the day because he never got a single, but in the second game he added a double, triple and three RBIs and Vicars drove in two more runs in support of Stone.
