Metro Roundup: ‘Run Through The Jungle’ on Saturday

The Exotic Feline Rescue Center is hosting the “Run Through The Jungle” 5K run/walk Saturday at its Center Point shelter.

The event takes place on the grounds of the Exotic Feline Rescue Center and runners will pass by the compound that includes 190 lions and tigers.

There will be live music, snacks and refreshments provided. Participants under the age of 6 must be accompanied by an adult.

Entry fee is $22. A tour of the Exotic Feline Rescue Center is included in the fee. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., with the race to follow at 10:30.

• Hutson honored — Indiana State sophomore Kylie Hutson continued to re-write the Indiana State and Missouri Valley Conference record books with her impressive win in the women’s pole vault last Friday in the Billy Hayes Invitational at Bloomington.

For that effort, Hutson was named the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Women’s Field Athlete of the Week on Wednesday by the conference office.

The honor is the fourth for Hutson in her short ISU career and second during the current outdoor season, as she took home the honor April 9 after a strong showing in the EIU Big Blue Classic.

She also won the award twice during the 2007 indoor season (Jan. 16 and Feb. 6) before becoming the conference champion in the event during the indoor and outdoor seasons as a freshman.

The Terre Haute native battled constant rain and Indiana’s Vera Neuenswander throughout the pole vault competition in the Billy Hayes Invitational, but she eventually cleared 13 feet, 7.25 inches to win the event outright.

That vault broke her own outdoor school record in the event of 13-3.5, which she set earlier this season in the Sea Ray Relays, and also moved her into 12th place on the Division I women’s outdoor regional descending order list.

In addition, Hutson’s height tied her for the best women’s vault in Missouri Valley Conference history with Wichita State’s Jackie Brown, who set the mark during the 2006 season.

Hutson will turn her attention toward defending her conference title in the pole vault when she and the rest of the Sycamores begin competition in the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference outdoor track and field championships Friday at Carbondale, Ill.

Tennis

• ISU women get AD Cup — The Indiana State women’s team captured the Athletic Director Cup for the fourth straight year, it was announced recently.

The Athletic Director Cup honors the team that posts the highest team grade-point average of all the sports teams at Indiana State.

Seniors Marie Caujolle (3.64 GPA), Fadzai Maziyazi (3.56 GPA), Jennifer Migan (3.48 GPA) and Joanne Schickerling (3.85 GPA) were named to the Indiana State Athletic Honor Roll. In addition, Schickerling was named to the All-Academic team for having the highest GPA on the women’s team.

Schickerling and Caujolle were also named recipients of the Missouri Valley Conference Commissioner’s Academic Excellence Award. Both were also members of the MVC Honor Roll along with Migan, Masiyazi and freshman Sarah Meghoufel.

Migan and Schickerling were named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete first team for the third straight year while Caujolle was named to the honorable-mention squad for the second time.

Schickerling was named the Most Valuable Player on the 2007-2008 women’s tennis team during presentations at the 2008 Indiana State University spring sports banquet May 5. Migan received the Coach’s Award, while Masiyazi won the Team Leadership award.

Meghoufel received two honors, being named the Most Improved Player on the team and recipient of the 2008 Stadler Award, a $2,500 scholarship presented to a women’s tennis player based on athletic and academic achievements during the season. Jennifer Migan received the first two awards. The award was named in honor of the late Mary Ann Stadler, former ISU women’s tennis coach.

Golf

• Valley golfers comopete — At Otter Creek, Indianapols pro Denny Ford won a playoff Wednesday to claim his first championship in the rain-shortened Indiana PGA Senior Open.

Ford and Terre Haute amateur Tom Jones held the lead after the first round, each shooting 2-under-par 70 on Tuesday.

Officials declared the course unplayable for the second round Wednesday. Ford and Jones took part in a playoff.

Ford won it on the first hole with par, while a Jones’ putt for par was short by inches. Jones had won a playoff to win the event in 2006.

Jones is coming back from hip surgery performed earlier in the year.

The field was cut to the low 60 for the second round. Ted Kaperak shot a 74 to tie for 24th.

Boxing

• Pro card coming to Evansville — Terre Haute Boxing Club coach and World Boxing Foundation America’s Coordinator Billy Reese is co-promoting a “Friday Night Fights” pro card in conjunction with Childers’ Promotions Friday at the Metro Sports Center in Evansville.

The card will feature a WBF All-America’s welterweight title fight between Brandon Baue (8-2) of St. Louis and Keon Johnson (6-1) of Indianapolis.

Mick Croucher, president of the WBF from Melbourne, Australia, has appointed Terre Haute’s former WBF cruiserweight champion Terry Ray as supervisor of the title fight.

Ringside and VIP seats are sold out, but $30 table seats and $25 general-admission seats remain on sale.

Soccer

• U14 Flyers win, lose, tie — At Evansville, the Terre Haute Flyers U14AA girls team won the opening game of the St. Mary’s Classic tournament this past weekend.

They defeated Washington Lady Blitz 6-0. Kourtney Utter and Sarah Senseman each scored a goal and Molly McKee added four more.

The Flyers lost the second game 5-1 to Evansville Elite Explosion. McKee scored on a corner kick from Senseman.

The Flyers tied the final game against FC Evansville Dragons, 4-4. Christina Haag scored a goal and McKee scored three.

Stacy Caldwell put forth a commendable performance in goal for the weekend, while Rachel Fazekas, Brooke Humphrey and Grace Sarris led the defensive effort.

• U13AA Flyers win at home — The Terrre Haute Flyers U13AA girls travel team defeated Columbus Express at home Saturday, 4-1.

Courtney Hubbard scored off a cross from Jaime McKee. Katherine Senseman added the second goal from a corner kick by Makenzie Mauriello. Nicole Mikolajczyk scored two in the second half. Kelli Buchanan and McKee each had one save in goal.

The Flyers will play in the State Challenge Cup this weekend at Columbus.
