Metro Roundup: ISU baseball falls, will not play in MVC tournament

Omaha, Neb. — Indiana State played its last of what at times must have seemed like a thousand college baseball road games on Sunday, dropping a pair of games to Creighton that eliminated the Sycamores from the Missouri Valley Conference postseason tournament.

Creighton broke away from a 1-all tie after the first inning of the opening game, which was postponed from Saturday by rain, to post a 5-2 victory and then rallied from a 4-2 deficit to record a 7-4 win in the nightcap. The Bluejays had won 6-5 in 12 innings on Friday.

In the opening game of the day, the Sycamores pushed over a run in the top of the first inning to take the early lead. Ryan Strausborger led off with a double, went to third on Chris Schmidt’s sacrifice bunt and scored as Nick Ciolli grounded out to second.

Creighton came back with single runs in the first and second and two more in the sixth.

ISU was within 4-2 after Brady Shoemaker led off the Sycamore seventh with a single and came around on a walk to Brian Jett, a sacrifice and Brian Ramirez’s grounder, but Creighton got that run back in the seventh. The Sycamores also wasted a triple by Strausborger in the eighth.

In the nightcap, the Sycamores took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Ciolli reached base on a dropped third strike and scored on a single by Jett.

Creighton took a 2-1 lead in the fifth, but an RBI single by Ciolli and a two-run double by Dave Brumagin put ISU ahead 4-2 in the top of the sixth.

Creighton, getting great production from the bottom of the batting order, answered with its own three runs in the sixth, then two more in the seventh.

Indiana State has a home game Tuesday against Miami of Ohio, then closes out its season with a three-game MVC series against Illinois State that starts Thursday.

• Mack finishes fourth — At Port Saint Lucie, Fla., Indiana State’s Mackenzie Mack had a final round 80 and placed fourth Sunday at the 22nd PGA Minority Golf Championship.

The three-round score of 248 for the ISU sophomore was 13 behind winner Sara Young of Florida State. Alexis Garduno of Old Dominion was second at 244 and Maria Urquila of Bethune-Cookman third at 246.

• Hambrock wins — At St. Louis, Lauren Hambrock of Terre Haute won the 10-and-under girls singles title at the Prince Sunset Tennis Center’s Circuit One tournament.

Hambrock defeated Kate Rosenberger of Chesterfield, Mo., 6-2, 6-0 in the semifinals and downed Rebecca Davis of St. Louis 6-0, 6-1 for the championship.

Auto racing

• Stillwell, Seals winners — Todd Stillwell and Ron Seals were two winners in Saturday’s races at Action City Dragway USA.

Stillwell bested Jake Orman in super pro and Seals defeated Chad Isley in pro class action.

This week, Fun Night runs are slated Friday with regular point racing for all classes Saturday. Time runs are from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with eliminations at 1:30.

Blake Fitzpatrick flipped in the fourth heat. No serious injury was reported.
