Metro Roundup: ISU football opens spring practice drills Sunday at Memorial Stadium

TERRE HAUTE The Indiana State football program, under the direction of first-year head coach Trent Miles, will open spring practice drills with a two-hour workout at 3 p.m. Sunday at Memorial Stadium.

Sunday’s practice is the first of 15 spring workouts which culminates with the annual Blue/White Spring Scrimmage at Memorial Stadium at 1 p.m. April 19.

All practices are free and open to the general public.

Sunday — 3-5 p.m.

April 1 — 5:30-7:15 a.m.

April 2 — 5:30-7:15 a.m.

April 4 — 6-8 p.m.

April 5 — 10 a.m.-noon (scrimmage)

April 6 — 3-5 p.m.

April 8 — 5:30-7:15 a.m.

April 10 — 5:30-7:15 a.m.

April 11 — 6-8 p.m.

April 12 — 10 a.m. -noon (scrimmage)

April 13 — 3-5 p.m.

April 15 — 5:30-7:15 a.m.

April 17 — 5:30-7:15 a.m.

April 18 — 5:30-7:15 a.m.

April 19 — 1 p.m. (Blue/White Scrimmage)

Basketball

• Rudolphi honored again — Indiana State senior women’s player Laura Rudolphi is one of 10 student-athletes to earn the State Farm MVC Good Neighbor Award as announced by the league office this week for her efforts in the classroom, on the court and in the community this past winter.

Rudolphi currently holds a 3.98 grade-point average in Business Insurance. On the court, she owns school records for career blocked shots and games played

She is a two-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America, including a First Team mention this past season. Rudolphi has also been a two-time All-MVC Scholar Athlete, a two-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selection and was the 2007 MVC Prairie Farms Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She was also a candidate for the 2007-08 Lowe’s Senior Class Award and has been a member of the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll every semester.

The other nine winter honorees were Kelly Krumwiede of Bradley, Sam Schuett of Creighton, Lindsay Whorton of Drake, Rebekah Parker of Evansville, Kristi Cirone of Illinois State, Rudolphi, Amy Crowder of Missouri State, Chris Lawson of Northern Iowa, Erica Smith of Southern Illinois, and Whitney Rice of Wichita State.

• Rockville’s Mahurin named — The Indiana Basketball Coaches Association has released its Top 15 seniors and Top 15 underclassmen lists for Indiana boys basketball and Rockville junior R.J. Mahurin is on the latter list.

Terre Haute South’s Zach Odum was on the honorable-mention senior list, while the honorable-mention underclassmen list includes Thomas Anderson of Terre Haute North and Billy Newton of Shakamak.

Soccer

• ISU adds five players, assistant coach — Five additional recruits and a new assistant coach have been added to Indiana State’s 2008 roster, according to women’s coach Vernon Croft.

Croft also has added a key staff member in Rebecca Zakrajsek, a current professor at Indiana State, who will serve as the team's full-time sports enhancement coach.

The recruiting class for next season now totals 14 players, the largest recruiting class since Croft arrived at ISU in 1999.

The five new players are:



Melissa Spisak — Currently finishing up her last year at Crown Point High School in Indiana. A four-year varsity player, a two-time defensive MVP award winner. in two of those years. In 2007, named to the Indiana Youth Soccer Association All-District Team in 2007 and Player of the Year for the Duneland Athletic Conference.

Tia Perry — A four-year player at Lakeland High School in Indiana, where she holds the career record for assists (26) and ranks second in career goals (47).

Laura Terry — Will complete her fourth year of high school soccer this spring at Grand Haven, Mich. The four-year varsity starter received the Scholar Athlete award the last three years. In 2003

Natalie Smailis — A three-year varsity letterwinner from Highland High School in Indiana. Smailis tallied 16 assists on 36 goals her senior year where she helped her team to a first-time sectional championship.

Laura Hall — From Coffs Harbour in New South Wales, Australia, playing at Bishop Druett College.



• Flyers U13AA girls win, tie — The Terre Haute Flyers U13AA girls travel team won its season opener at home Saturday, then played to a 1-1 tie Sunday.

On Saturday, the Flyers defeated Hoosier FC, 4-1. Joy Jakaitis, Nicole Mikolajczyk and Annie Mullican scored, while Makenzie Mauriello and Emilee Pemberton had assists.

On Sunday, the Flyers tied Fishers FCS, 1-1. Morgan Strahm scored off a corner kick by Mauriello. Kelli Buchanan was goalkeeper for both matches and was credited with seven saves.

Baseball

• VU, Rosselli hitting ball a ton — At Harrisburg, Ill., 48 runs, 37 hits and 12 home runs — that’s not bad for a week. But Vincennes University did it all in a day’s work as the Trailblazers (14-8) annihilated Southeastern Illinois 21-4 and 27-4 Tuesday.

Former Terre Haute North player John Rosselli had two doubles and a grand-slam homer in the doubleheader.

Swimming

• Broughton, Stockton honored — A pair of Terre Haute swimmers were honored by the Indiana High School Swimming Coaches Association recently.

David Broughton of Terre Haute North was named All-State honorable mention in the 100-yard breaststroke, while David Stockton of Terre Haute South was named All-Academic/All-State.
