Metro Roundup: Weather forces ISU baseball to cancel game against Illinois

Tribune-Star staff report — Indiana State cancelled its Tuesday home game against Illinois due to inclement weather.

The decision to postpone the game had to made around noon. At the time, there was a sleet/rain mix in Terre Haute and ISU officials decided to cancel believing that conditions might not improve.

Unfortunately for ISU, by the 4 p.m. game time, conditions were clear and warmer. The Sycamores practiced during the intended game time.

Officially the game is not cancelled. It was postponed to today. The rub? The game will be played at 4:30 p.m. at Illinois. Josh Varno will start for the 5-12 Sycamores.

It is the second home game wiped out by bad weather this season. A March 5 game against Indiana was also cancelled.

ISU’s next attempt to play at home is April 4 when Northern Iowa visits.

• VU’s 8-game winning streak snapped — At Centralia, Ill., Kaskaskia ended Vincennes University’s eight-game winning streak Monday afternoon, beating the visiting Trailblazers, 10-0 and 4-3.

“The better team won the opening game,” VU coach Jon Adams said. “They hit everything Jason [Nantz] threw up there and that’s a real credit to their hitters.”

Nantz (1-2) started, pitched three innings and gave up nine hits and five runs. He struck out three Kaskaskia batters.

The Blue Devils banged out a total of 13 hits against Nantz and reliever Dylan Anderson.

The Blazers (12-8) scored two runs to take a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the fifth in game two.

John Rosselli doubled and took third on a sacrifice bunt by Aaron Senzell. Cole Vicars drove Rosselli home to tie the game.

After Vicars advanced to second on a wild pitch, Ryan Munro singled home the lead run.

Kaskaskia countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame and made it stand up for the win.

Collin Armold started, pitched four innings and gave up three earned runs. T.J. Amerman, a former Riverton Parke standout, gave up the winning run in the fifth and took the loss (1-3).

The Trailblazers play at Southeastern Illinois at 2 p.m. (CST) on Tuesday.
