Ceremonial groundbreaking for new aquatics center Monday

Vigo School Corp looking at naming rights for items

TERRE HAUTE — A ceremonial groundbreaking will take place Monday for the new, $9.8 million Vigo Schools Aquatic Center, which will be located at Voorhees Park.

The event will take place at 9 a.m.

Pool features will include a 50-meter by 25-yard Oympic-sized pool, a therapy pool and spectator seating for more than 350 people. The new, 30,000 square-foot facility will replace aging pools at Terre Haute South Vigo, North Vigo and West Vigo high schools.

The event is ceremonial as construction contracts have not yet been awarded, Superintendent Dan Tanoos said Thursday.

“I think it’s a tremendously exciting time for Vigo County, not only for swimming in our community, but for the community overall,” he said.

He believes it will be an economic boon for Vigo County as “we begin to attract larger swimming events due to having a facility that can accommodate sectionals and various swimming competitions that before we couldn’t handle in our schools.”

The project will be funded through a bond issue.

The district is still working on construction contracts, as two of the bids — for site work and steel — came in too high. Twelve contracts are involved and those two came in too high, he said.

“It’s caused us some challenges. We will be rebidding a few items to make sure we stay within budget,” Tanoos said. “We’re going to be fine. In the end, it will be okay.”

Construction won’t proceed until the contracts are finalized, and he anticipates the School Board will approve contracts at the July board meeting.

The district is appreciative of any donations toward the project. “We’ve had a couple of entities step up thus far and say they would be of help. We prefer not to mention those at this time,” he said.

Donations will help purchase some alternate items the district wants for the project, including a second, movable bulkhead that can be used to divide the pool into sections.

“We’re looking at naming rights of things,” Tanoos said.

Garmong is the construction manager for the project. Even though start of construction is delayed about a month, “They feel we will be on time for the opening of the 2015-16 school year,” Tanoos said.

The district is leasing about eight acres of property from the Terre Haute Parks Department to construct the pool.
