UPDATE: Former Terre Haute mayor in critical condition at Methodist Hospital

TERRE HAUTE — Former Terre Haute Mayor Judy Anderson remains in critical condition this morning in an Indianapolis hospital following a Sunday crash in which her husband, Brent, died.

Judy Anderson was airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis with multiple injuries, including a possible broken neck, broken ribs and head injuries, according to Putnam County Coroner David Brown, who responded to the scene of the crash.

Brent Anderson was pronounced dead at the scene of the Putnam County crash, which occurred at about 5 p.m. on westbound U.S. 40 at the town of Reelsville.

Brown said the couple’s westbound Lincoln Town Car went off the north side of the road and struck a small, parked cargo trailer before crashing head-on into a tree. Brent Anderson was driving.

The reason for the crash was unknown, Brown said, but investigators are looking into the possibility that the driver fell asleep, had a medical problem, or was blinded by the evening sun. The Putnam County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the crash.

An autopsy for Brent Anderson is scheduled for late this afternoon in Vigo County by forensic pathologist Dr. Roland Kohr.

Judy Anderson held several positions in local government before being elected mayor of Terre Haute in 1999. She won the Democratic Party primary that year, defeating the incumbent mayor and easily winning election in the fall. Anderson was the first woman elected mayor of Terre Haute, serving one term, 2000 to 2004.

Brent Anderson taught in Vigo County schools and was a former athletic coach at area schools.
