Terre Haute Rotary Club hands out $7K in grants

TERRE HAUTE — The Terre Haute Rotary Club distributed $7,000 in grants Tuesday to 11 nonprofit organizations through the Terre Haute Rotary Club Foundation.

The largest grant of $1,000 went to The Wabash Valley Health Center Inc., more commonly known as St. Ann’s Medical Clinic, which provides medical, dental and other care to people who are uninsured or have no resources.

The corporate makeup of the clinic was altered after the closing of St. Ann’s Church, said Michael Eldred, a board member of Wabash Valley Health Center.

The donation will be used to supply free eye glasses to the uninsured.

“UAP Clinic has assisted us with giving people eye exams and they come back to us with prescriptions for glasses,” said Sister Lawrence Ann Liston, clinic administrator.

Last month, the clinic had 1,328 visits with 112 new patients, Liston said.

“We are seeing 10,000 to 12,000 people a year now at the clinic, so we are most grateful for all of the support of the community and that of the Rotarians,” Liston said.

Art Spaces received an $800 grant for its Wabash Valley Outdoor Sculpture Collection for a sculpture of Terre Haute native song writer Paul Dresser.

The project for a Dresser sculpture is still in the fundraising stage, aimed at collecting $75,000, said Mary Kramer, executive director of Art Spaces.

“We are hoping to run an artist search and use the idea of whatever comes out of that as part of the fundraising process,” Kramer said, such as an electronic model or a physical clay model of the proposed artwork.

The search for an artist will start “in the next few months,” she said.

Art Spaces will launch a fundraising project next week — a CD of songs about the Wabash River — for the Dresser artwork.

Ryves Youth Center also received $800 to make improvements in its computer lab; $750 grants each went to Family Service Association, to support a parenting education program; and Vigo County CASA for an enrichment program.

Other grants include $700 to the Vigo County Education Foundation for high school students to learn design and manufacturing processes by creating structures to project bats; $500 each to Terre Haute Children’s Museum; League of Terre Haute’s Clothes Closet; and Salvation Army.

Sheldon Swope Art Gallery will use a $450 grant for a summer youth art program and a $250 grant went to the Terre Haute Women’s Club for its Shoe Bus, which provides free shoes to disadvantaged children.

The grants were presented at the Holiday Inn in Terre Haute, where the club meets weekly.
