DNA match leads to arrest in summer burglary

TERRE HAUTE — A recent DNA match in an Indiana database has led to the arrest of a burglary suspect by the Indiana State Police at Putnamville.

Christopher Crystal Jones, 34, Terre Haute, was arrested at 11:58 a.m. Tuesday by Indiana State Police and the U.S. Marshal’s Service Fugitive Task Force.

The arrest was made during a traffic stop at Lafayette and Haythorne avenues. Jones was transported to the Vigo County Jail where he is being held on $25,000 bond for one count of burglary, a class-C felony and one count of attempted theft, a class-D felony. The warrant was obtained through Vigo County Court Division 6.

The case originated on July 17, 2011, when Indiana State Police responded to a burglary in progress at 237 S. 23rd St., where a suspect had broken a window on the west side of the residence and was able to enter and exit through the opening. As the suspect fled the scene, DNA was left behind on the broken window.

Indiana State Police crime scene investigator Sgt. Kris Fitzgerald processed the scene and collected the DNA from the window. The DNA was then sent to the Indiana State Police Laboratory and a suspect’s DNA profile was developed over time. The profile was then entered into the national Combined DNA Index System and days later found to be consistent with Jones, a convicted offender,

The initial response to the burglary call and the subsequent criminal investigation was conducted by ISP Sgt. Jared Nicoson.
