Kids shop at Harry’s HideAway

TERRE HAUTE — The first day of Hanukkah (also spelled Chanukah) is just around the corner, and kids in the Wabash Valley are already preparing for it.

The United Hebrew Congregation in Terre Haute was host to a special event Sunday called Hanukkah Harry’s HideAway.

Organized by Patty Lewis and Jan Chait of the Sisterhood of the United Hebrew Congregation, the event included shopping, gift wrapping and lunch, among other fun activities for kids of all ages.

But the main event, which started at noon, was shopping for Hanukkah gifts, followed by wrapping.

“It gives the kids a chance to buy gifts for their parents [and other family members] while the parents are not with them,” Lewis said.

The event allowed the kids to choose the gifts they want to give their family members and possibly keep them a surprise.

There were pencils, small flashlights, dry erase boards, hand sanitizers and other potential presents.

And the items did not cost more than $1, organizers said.

Lainey Anshutz, 10, and her younger sister, Ella, together picked up a few items.

“I have a dreidel for my little sister [Ella],” Lainey said. A dreidel is a four-sided spinning top played during Hanukkah.

Five-year-old Ella’s present from her big sister was no longer a surprise.

Lainey also picked up erasers for her cousins.

Some Jewish families have traditionally shared presents every night on Hanukkah, Lewis said, but each family does it differently.

Another young shopper, Jennifer Garcia-Israel, 11, held some money in her hand as she asked about the prices of the items.

Later, she picked up a candle to give to her dad “because he likes having candles” for the house, she said.

She also had a Hanukkah candle “just for us [the family] to use.”
