Shooting reports unfounded, Vigo County Sheriff’s chief deputy says

TERRE HAUTE — Reports of Sunday evening shootings from moving vehicles proved to be inaccurate, officials said.

Emergency scanner traffic indicated reports of a gun fight between moving vehicles headed toward Vigo County from Illinois about 6:30 p.m. Sunday. After 8 p.m., Vigo County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Clark Cottom said those reports proved to be exaggerated.

“It was unfounded,” he said. “Anybody with any information about that is invited to call the department.”

Witnesses in the area reported hearing something that sounded like gunshots, but upon further investigation, officers found no evidence that had occurred.

“There was a road rage call, but there was not any witnessed shots fired,” he said, explaining there are a number of possible explanations for the sounds heard.
