New TH sewer bills on the way

TERRE HAUTE — Thousands of Terre Haute area residents should be getting their new sewer bills before the end of this week, city officials said Wednesday.

The bills, originally expected to be mailed around Jan. 15, were delayed about two weeks as city officials sifted through a large volume of billing data provided by Indiana American Water Co., which formerly handled sewer bills for the city, said Brad Speidel, the city’s information technology director.

The new bills “should be landing in peoples’ mailboxes as early as [today],” Speidel said. More likely, however, is Friday or Saturday, he said.

Well water customers who also use the city’s sanitary system and residents of Seelyville will see their bills arrive a little later, perhaps by Monday, Speidel said.

More than a year ago, Indiana American Water’s parent company, American Water, announced it was getting out of the sewer system billing service. The move, which affected dozens of communities in the Midwest, was designed to allow the company to “focus efforts on its core service of providing high-quality water service,” a company official told the Tribune-Star in November.

The new sewer bills will have the City of Terre Haute seal visible through a window in the upper left hand corner, Speidel said. The first bills will be for water usage in the month of December only, he added.

Any overdue balances with Indiana American Water Co. will be handled later, as that company closes the books on its billing services, Speidel said.

Originally, city officials hoped the bills would be mailed in the middle of January. Sifting through billing data has forced a delay to allow the billing to be more accurate, Speidel said. After a transition period of perhaps a few months, bills will ultimately be mailed in mid-month, he said.

In all, about 25,000 accounts will receive sewer bills from the city. Any errors in the new bills can be reported to the billing services provider, TPI Billing Solutions, at 800-955-6598.

The minimum bill will remain $15.21. About 10,000 customers are billed at that rate, Speidel said.
