Eel River Bridge on Indiana 46 open to traffic

---- — The Indiana Department of Transportation announced that the Indiana 46 Bridge over the Eel River is repaired and opened as of 7 p.m. Friday.

George R. Harvey & Son from Danville completed the expedited repairs. A weight limit of 19 tons is in place on this bridge.

Signs displaying “Weight Limit 19 Tons” are posted on both sides of the bridge and at the intersections of Indiana 59 and Indiana 46 west of Bowling Green, as well as at Indiana 246 and Indiana 46 at Vandalia, and in Spencer at U.S. 231 and Indiana 46.

The bridge is on a corridor highway between Terre Haute in Vigo County and Bloomington in Monroe County. The bridge closure resulted in a detour of more than 17 miles.

Construction began during the first week of October. The bridge on Indiana 46 was closed July 31 after structural engineers retained by INDOT recommended closing the bridge after identifying more corrosion in the structural steel than was previously documented.
