CEO Teffeteller resigns from Union Hospital

Former president served 7 years in varying capacities, overseeing recent expansion

TERRE HAUTE — Scott Teffeteller has resigned as president and chief executive officer of Union Hospital, duties he assumed in December 2010.

The hospital announced the resignation late Friday afternoon in a news release.

Teffeteller “advised the hospital’s board of directors that he wishes to pursue other professional opportunities in health care administration,” according to the news release.

Teffeteller, contacted by telephone, said he had no comment.

Kym Pfrank, Union’s senior vice president and chief operations office, will serve as interim president and CEO.

The hospital board will immediately begin a national search for Teffeteller’s successor, said John S. Lukens, board chairman.

Teffeteller became Union’s vice president and chief operating officer in March 2006 before moving up to the role of executive vice president in January 2008. He became interim president and CEO in September 2010.

After a nationwide search, the board selected him to become president and CEO in December 2010; he succeeded David Doerr.

Before joining Union, Teffeteller held various positions with a number of other health care organizations, including chief operating officer of Terre Haute Regional Hospital and COO of the Medical Center of Aurora in Denver.

“We wish Scott well in his future pursuits and our board is grateful for his many years of work as part of Union’s executive team and for the outstanding leadership he provided the organization,” Lukens said in the news release.

In an interview, Lukens said, “We are parting on good terms and have positive comments to make about each other.”

While it might seem like an abrupt departure, “There is recognition of some difference in philosophies about how to move forward in the system,” Lukens said.

He went on to say that Teffeteller “did make some great contributions to the hospital and to Union Health System.”

Looking to the hospital’s future, Lukens pointed to a nationwide trend of change. “The challenge is how organizations react to that change, which will be a critical issue,” he said.

Lukens anticipated a national search for a new president/CEO could take four to six months.

In the news release, Teffeteller stated, “I have enjoyed working with Union Hospital’s voluntary board leaders, outstanding medical and professional staff and hundreds of dedicated employees and volunteers who work for our patients each day. The primary objective of that team has been to provide quality care to our patients, and I know that work will continue.”

Under Teffeteller’s leadership, Union Hospital, Inc. has received several regional and national awards and recognition from the following areas: Environmentally Friendly Business of the Year, Best Places to Work in Indiana for five consecutive years and Hospital of Choice for multiple years. It was recently awarded at the Platinum Level for the Performance of Excellence Award, according to the news release.

In a December 2010 interview, Teffeteller indicated that “health reform, containing costs, aligning with our physicians and improving the patient experience are our challenges ahead, and Union Hospital is well positioned to be at the forefront in meeting those challenges,” he said.

In January 2010, the hospital opened a new facility, Union Hospital East, a 500,000 square-foot, $185 million structure with four stories and a lower level.
