CLAY COUNTY, Ind. – A 3-ton weight limit restriction has been placed on the Indiana 46 bridge over Birch Creek one mile west of Indiana 59.
After a recent inspection, the Indiana Department of Transportation determined that the conditions of the bridge warrant the 3-ton weight restriction on the bridge, states a release today from INDOT. Signs displaying “Weight Limit 3 Tons” are posted on both sides of the bridge and at the intersections of Indiana 59 and Indiana 46, Indiana 159 and Indiana 46, and at Interstate 70 and Indiana 46.
The pony truss bridge was originally built in 1932.
The release says INDOT is working to accelerate construction such that weight limits could be increased. The bridge is already in INDOT’s capital program as a replacement contract and is scheduled for bids in August 2014.
