Senior center pulls out the plastic

Members, volunteers sell ice cream, Tupperware at fundraiser

TERRE HAUTE — Activity was the key word on Monday afternoon as a lively group of senior citizens enjoyed an ice cream social and examined that old family favorite, Tupperware, in a two-for-one fundraiser at the Wabash Senior Activity Center.

With 439 members, the center serves a clientele with a variety of interests.

For instance, the craft club regularly meets to make projects such as washcloths or scarves that can be donated or sold to raise funds. Several paintings are displayed and for sale by the art class students, who will donate a portion of their sales back to the center.

On other days, groups will play mahjong, a game of colorful tiles, while others play pinochle or euchre. And of course, bunches of members play bingo.

Upstairs in the center are classes for tai chi, zumba, belly dancing, line dancing and jazzercise.

But on Monday afternoon, ice cream and the classic plastic storage containers were the focus.

“It’s the only job where you can party and drive home legally,” said Tupperware manager Connie Eaglin as she displayed a variety of products in colorful stacks.

Because 40 to 50 percent of the proceeds from the sales will go to the senior center as a fundraiser, many of the center members were seriously considering restocking their plasticware.

Members and volunteers Cathie Laska and Diane Herbert helped where needed, including selling raffle tickets for a Tupperware drawing. Laska said she enjoys the daily tai chi classes, and she was encouraging Herbert to get involved.

“This is a very friendly bunch of people,” Laska said of the center members. “I would think that people who are now by themselves would benefit a lot, because these people are very social, and there’s a lot going on.”

Receptionist Jan Hayes said the center seldom has a dull moment. Among the activities coming up are a holiday bazaar in November. People can rent a table to sell items such as jewelry, sewing projects, baked goods and other items.

The monthly Dine with a Doc and Lunch with a Lawyer programs are popular, Hayes said, as is the Diner’s Club Cafe, which provides dine-in, carry-out or delivered meals as a fundraiser for the center.

A book discussion group meets on the first Tuesday of each month, and a casino bus trip is planned for Sept. 10.

The Wabash Senior Activity Center is located at 300 S. Fifth St. at the corner of Fifth and Poplar streets. It is open daytime from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays, except Thursday when it closes at noon.
