TERRE HAUTE —
The name of a fatal crash victim has been released by the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department.
Russ Nelson, 19, was pronounced dead at the crash scene about two miles north of U.S. 40 on North Main Street in Seelyville.
The three-vehicle crash occurred at about 6:50 p.m. Thursday when a southbound vehicle driven by 21-year-old Raymond Funkhouser Jr. of Terre Haute went out of control after the 2004 Dodge Stratus dropped off the right side of the road and the driver overcorrected, according to police. The car, which was traveling south at a high rate of speed, crossed the center line of the road and clipped a northbound vehicle driven by Michael Sherertz, 61. The Dodge continued out of control and collided with a second northbound vehicle driven by Robert Moreland, 67.
Nelson was trapped inside the vehicle, police report. Funkhouser, Sherertz and Moreland were transported to area hospitals for treatment. Funkhouser was then airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital, where he remained this morning with non-life threatening injuries.
Police report that alcohol was not a factor in the crash, and that seat belts were in use.
Indiana State Police are assisting in crash reconstruction. Also responding to the scene were Seelyville and Riley fire departments, and ambulances from TransCare and Care.
