UPDATE: Early morning crash on U.S. 41 sends three to area hospitals

TERRE HAUTE — A two-vehicle crash at about 5:30 a.m. today on U.S. 41 at Springhill Drive resulted in three people being taken to area hospitals, according to an Indiana State Police news release.

A preliminary investigation by police showed a pickup truck driven by 24-year-old James M. Waugh of Marshall, Ill., was southbound on U.S. 41 and failed to stop for a red light at Springhill Drive. The Waugh vehicle then struck a car traveling westbound on Springhill Drive. The car was driven by 20-year-old Nancy M. Nasser-Fortin of Terre Haute.

Waugh was transported to Terre Haute Regional Hospital for neck and back pain. Nasser-Fortin was transported to Union Hospital of Terre Haute for general pain and later transported by helicopter ambulance to Methodist Hospital. A passenger in the Nasser-Fortin vehicle, William Jarvis, 30, of Terre Haute was airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for neck and back pain.

Methodist Hospital could not yet provide conditions for Jarvis and Nasser-Fortin late Wednesday afternoon. Waugh was in stable condition at Terre Haute Regional, a hospital official said.

Waugh was cited for disregarding an automatic signal.
