Fitness summit Saturday at North Vigo HS

TERRE HAUTE — The Blast Inc. Fitness Group, led by former NFL football player Ernie Thompson, is hosting a fitness summit from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Terre Haute North Vigo High School.

“We will be demonstrating and allowing those who attend to participate in our various exercise classes,” Thompson said. “The purpose of the summit is to get more people from the community involved.”

People of all fitness levels are welcome to attend and participate in activities geared to their fitness level.

Anthony Thompson, pastor of Lighthouse Community Church in Bloomington (and Ernie’s brother), will be the keynote speaker. Anthony Thompson, a North Vigo graduate, is a former NFL running back and a finalist for the Heisman Trophy while at Indiana University. He will speak after lunch.

The fitness summit is sponsored by the Vigo County School Corp. and Hamilton Center. The VCSC Wellness Clinic will do health screenings from 8:30 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. The health screenings will include blood sugar, blood pressure, oxygen checks and pulse.

The summit will feature five demonstration sessions that consist of weightlifting; walking/running; cardio cross-training; high-intensity Blast drills; and step aerobics. “We’ll give people a chance to try it,” Thompson said. If people are interested, they can start attending the fitness group’s workouts.

The fitness group meets at 5:20 a.m. three days a week at the Terre Haute South Vigo High School weightroom. It also meets evenings.

A healthy lunch will be provided, and there will be a $10 charge to cover health screenings and lunch, Ernie Thompson said.

The objective is for people “to see what we do and for us to pull more people in from the community,” he said.

But even if people don’t join the Blast fitness group, the hope is they will become more aware of the importance of fitness and good nutrition and participate in some fitness activities.

During lunch, registered dietitian/nurse Jaci Pabst, a Blast team member, will be on hand to answer questions. Also, there will be a presentation by Dr. Tony Nasser, also a Blast member, who will talk about exercise from a doctor’s point of view.

Thompson said when he started the fitness group, his goal was to “help anyone I could,” no matter the fitness level.

He views the summit as a proactive response to the community’s health challenges related to obesity, diabetes and hypertension. The fitness team decided the summit “was a good thing to do for our community,” he said.

To register, email Thompson at eet@vigoschools.org by noon today. Also, those interested can go on Facebook to Team Blast Inc. Fitness Summit.
