Father accidentally shoots adult son

A Vermillion County man was injured in an accidental shooting Thursday evening after his father reportedly purchased a new handgun.

Sheriff Robert Spence reports that William Simonton, 20, suffered a single gunshot wound to the left leg just above the knee in the 6:50 p.m. incident in the parking lot of Darrel’s Custom Firearms in Cayuga.

Simonton was transported to Union Hospital in Clinton and later airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where he was treated and released.

Investigators report that the man’s father, Charles Simonton, had just purchased a .22 caliber handgun, and was leaning in a pickup truck checking the action on the firearm when the gun discharged. The bullet struck his son in the leg.

The shooting is being considered accidental, the sheriff’s department reports.
