Memorial Walk to Remember, for children lost, at Deming Park

TERRE HAUTE — Union Hospital’s RTS Bereavement Services program is sponsoring Terre Haute’s 26th annual Walk to Remember on Sunday.

The Walk to Remember takes place during National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month to remember babies that die during pregnancy or shortly after birth. The walk by parents, health professionals and friends across the nation symbolically unites those who have experienced a loss and those who care for them. It is also designed to raise public awareness to ensure that these families receive the sensitivity they deserve.

Registration for the walk will begin at 1 p.m. at the Ozok Shelter in Deming Park, near the Larrison Pavilion. Following registration, the walk will proceed one mile through the park, after which a memorial service will be conducted. Once the program has concluded, refreshments will be served in the shelter, offering time for sharing with other parents and caregivers. Those who cannot walk who would like to participate are welcome to join.

Before the walk, each participant will be given an opportunity to write a message to their baby or babies, to attach to a balloon bouquet. To ensure a successful balloon release, only written messages will be used. Those with a special poem they want to read, or to have read, at the memorial service in memory of their baby must let the coordinator know before the day of the walk by calling 812-238-4978 or emailing shoopengarner@ uhhg.org.

A small booklet will be prepared, in which participants’ names and the names of the babies who died will be listed. Walk to Remember T-shirts and sweatshirts will be available, while supplies last, as keepsakes of the event. No rain date is planned, so participants are advised to dress accordingly, and may bring blankets and folding chairs. The program will last about two hours.

Call 812-238-4978 or email shoopengarner@uhhg.org to register for the walk.
