Man sentenced to 12 years in fatal drunken driving case

TERRE HAUTE — After listening to emotional testimony from the family of Leylahnd Owens, a motorcyclist who died in a crash with a drunk driver, a judge has issued Travis Ley a 17-year sentence.

Ley was found guilty in October of causing death and serious bodily injury while operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol and a controlled substance. He was sentenced to 17 years, with 12 being executed in the department of corrections and five on supervised release. He was also fined $5,000 and had his driver’s license suspended for five years, starting immediately.

Vigo County Superior Court Judge Michael Rader handed down the sentence this afternoon before a packed gallery. The vast majority of people present were friends and family of Owens, who was 22 when he was killed in May 2012. Jacob Quinn, who was injured in the same crash that killed Owens, testified at the sentencing hearing today and was present when the  judge issued the sentence.

Ley told the judge he had remorse just before the sentence was issued, but Judge Rader said he failed to see any real remorse from Ley.
