TERRE HAUTE — Calling all photographers and tree enthusiasts.

Entries are currently being accepted for the 2013 Photography Contest sponsored by TREES Inc., the Vigo County Public Library and the Tribune-Star. In observance of the 2013 Year of the River, a community-wide celebration of the Wabash River, the photo contest has adopted the theme, “Trees and the River.”

Photo entries must include a section of a river and trees, or a tree, or part of a tree. Entries must be received between Sept. 3 and Sept. 20. The deadline is 5 p.m. on

Sept. 20.

“The goal of the contest is to encourage the public to appreciate the beauty and value of trees and our environment,” said Barbara Brugnaux, president of TREES Inc., a local non-profit environmental volunteer group.

The contest, now in its eighth year, aims “to help people appreciate the natural beauty that is around us,” Brugnaux said.

There are three contest divisions: youth (ages 18 and younger), adult amateur and adult professional. First-place winners will receive $100; $75 for second-place winners; and $50 for third-placers.

There will be a photo exhibit in October at the Vigo County Public library. Winning photographs may be published in The Tribune-Star and/or used for promotional purposes.

Participants can deliver or mail their entries to the Vigo County Public Library Community Services Department. The library is located at One Library Square in downtown Terre Haute. The library also has examples on display from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Each participant may submit up to three photos (color or black and white; 8x10 inches or larger) but each photo  must be submitted individually in its own protective envelope, accompanied by a completed entry form. Entry forms can  be picked up at the Vigo County Public Library or downloaded from TREES Inc website at www.treesinc.org.

Photos must be mounted and may not be matted or framed.

After the awards ceremony and exhibit, all entries can be picked up between Nov. 1 and Nov. 15 at the Community Services Department of the Vigo County Public Library. Entries not picked up between those dates become property of TREES, according to the contest rules.
