Officers mourn loss of deputy sheriff

TERRE HAUTE — A 29-year veteran of the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department has lost a battle with cancer.

Deputy Sheriff Robert “Bob” Alan Bartlett, 51, died at Union Hospital on Saturday. He worked in the patrol division and spent 18 years working security at the county fair where he loved to work at the front gate.

Vigo County Sheriff Greg Ewing will close the county sheriff’s office from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday to allow staff to pay final respects.

“It was about July 3 that Bob thought he had a cold. He went to the hospital and it was full-blown cancer, in his lungs” and then spread, Ewing said. “He was gone in about 45 days. It was quite a shock,” the sheriff said.

“Bob was the guy that never had a bad day and always had a smile on his face. … I don’t know of one person Bob didn’t like, and he will be sadly missed,” the sheriff added.

Terre Haute Police and the Indiana State Police have stepped up to assist and will provide police services to the county to relieve the sheriff’s department.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday at DeBaun Funeral Homes Springhill Chapel, 85 E Springhill Drive. Pastor Fred Harrison will be officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
