New iPads arrive at school where 400 stolen

Insurance covered replacement cost

TERRE HAUTE — It was Christmas in August for freshmen at North Central High School on Wednesday.

The students received new iPads, something they should have received a few weeks ago.

Early this month, someone stole about 400 iPads from the school, technology that should have gone to students at both North Central and Union high schools. The stolen items were valued at more than $200,000.

Fortunately, insurance covered replacement costs, and the district received 405 new iPads last week. The technology department “worked 48 hours straight” loading software, said Mark Baker, superintendent of Northeast Sullivan School Corp.

Staff members also put the iPads in new covers, recorded serial numbers and assigned iPads to students.

On Tuesday night, there was an open house and parent meeting at North Central, and Wednesday, freshmen were the first to receive the iPads. Sophomores will receive theirs today, while the junior and senior distribution is Friday.

On Wednesday, “Everyone was happy. It was almost like Christmas morning around there today,” Baker said. “There was an electricity in the air.”

Union High School students will receive their iPads next week.

Last year, the district initiated a new program in which every high school student in grades 9 through 12 received an iPad as part of the move toward a digital curriculum. Students rent them similar to textbook rentals.
