Longer days for Vigo students

Earlier bus times start Monday as district makes up lost time

TERRE HAUTE — Starting Monday and extending through May 2, Vigo County School Corp. students will start school a little earlier and end the day a little later.

The extended day is being used to make up two days of school missed because of severe winter weather.

The extended school day schedule for Monday through May 2 will be:

• Elementary students will attend from 7:55 a.m. to 3 p.m.

• Secondary students will attend from 7:40 a.m. to 3:25 p.m.

All elementary bus routes will adjust the morning pickup time 10 minutes ahead of their current time. For example, if students are currently picked up at 7:40 a.m., they will be picked up at 7:30 a.m.

At the middle and high school level, bus routes will run five minutes earlier. For example, if students are currently picked up at 7:20 a.m., they would be picked up at 7:15 a.m. starting Monday.

Ray Azar, director of student services, sent a phone message to all families districtwide earlier this week to remind them of the changes, said Karen Goeller, deputy superintendent.

“Monday will be the first day implementing the new schedule,” she said. “Principals and teachers will obviously take that into consideration as we work through the new schedule.”

It’s the first time the district has extended the school day to make up weather-related missed days of school, she said. “It’s a great opportunity for us to make up the days without having to extend the school year” beyond June 6, a Friday, Goeller said.

The school district has missed eight days of school because of inclement weather, and the state of Indiana is requiring the district to make up six of the eight.

Three days — May 9, May 12 and May 23 — were already built into the school calendar for snow make-up days, if needed. Students will attend school those three days. Students also will attend June 6; initially, students’ school year was supposed to end June 5.

The remaining two days are being made up through early start and late dismissal from April 7 through May 2.

By extending days in April and adding one day at the end of the school year on June 6, the schedule “will not cause a drastic change that would interfere with students and families,” Superintendent Dan Tanoos said last month.

With the make-up day plan, students won’t have to attend school after Terre Haute North Vigo, South Vigo and West Vigo high school graduations, which take place on June 8.

Students and staff are on spring break this week.
