‘Trash Bash’ starts Saturday on Indiana highways

TERRE HAUTE — Motorists traveling along Indiana highways should be alert to trash pickup occurring as part of a spring cleaning campaign that begins Saturday and continues through April 27.

The Indiana Department of Transportation said in a press release that its annual Trash Bash coincides with Earth Day to help raise awareness of litter.

In 2013, more than 20,000 bags of trash were collected by INDOT crews, work crews from the Indiana Department of Correction and 1,600 Adopt-A-Highway volunteers.  Also collected were 1,256 cubic yards of loose debris, including an electric meter, laptop, horse whip and cash.

Wabash Valley Correctional Facility-supervised minimum-security offenders will be focusing on U.S. 41 from Knox County to Vigo County. Last year, WVCF crews collected 3,708 bags of trash. WVCF Superintendent Richard Brown said offender workers this year will be gathering items such as aluminum cans for recycling.

WVCF offenders will be highly visible, wearing reflective vests as they pick up trash from state roadways. INDOT reminds motorists to follow the posted work zone speed limit, use caution and consider worker safety when traveling through a work zone.

INDOT also encourages Hoosiers to report to local authorities areas where people have illegally dumped garbage.

To find out more about Adopt-A-Highway, Sponsor-A-Highway or other highway beautification efforts, call INDOT’s Vincennes District Customer Service Center at 1-800-279-5758.
