Big day draws near

Wabash Valley businesses preparing for annual spring bridal show

TERRE HAUTE — Show time is fast approaching, and folks at Lucia’s Bridals and Jim’s Tux Shops are making last-minute measurements, alterations and preparations for this year’s Wabash Valley Bridal Showcase April 6 at Terre Haute’s Hulman Center.

The showcase will feature a bridal runway show with nearly a dozen models showing off more than 50 dresses, said Karen Ater, owner of Lucia’s Bridals, one of two title sponsors of the event.

Getting set for the runway show is no small task; it requires several days of detailed preparation, Ater said. On top of it all, prom season is here, meaning the formal wear business is already brisk. The season’s first prom is April 5, the day before the showcase.

“It’s a lot of work,” Ater said of preparing for the showcase.

Lots of preparation is also under way at Jim’s, the other title sponsor.

“We’re going to put on a good display,” said Jim Arnett, owner of Jim’s. Tuxedos in different shades of gray are popular these days, as opposed to the traditional — and still in-demand — black tuxedo, he said. “Gray is huge,” he said. Slate blue is another popular color, Arnett added.

Lucia’s and Jim’s are among many vendors busily preparing for the bridal showcase. In fact, more than 40 vendors — including photographers, travel agents, florists, disc jockey services, restaurants, jewelers and tanning studios — are prepping for the big day.

“Whatever stage you’re in, in planning for your wedding, I guarantee there will be a wide range of industry pros who would love to help you make the best decisions for your big day,” said Erin Powell, advertising director at the Tribune-Star, which is hosting the event. “You can browse the booths, pick up information or get scheduled that day,” she said.

The showcase will once again include a wedding ring giveaway. Twenty-five pre-registered brides will pull ribbons from a Baesler’s Market cake and one lucky bride will win a ring valued at more than $1,200 provided by Roger’s Jeweler’s & Boutique. Other prizes will include a flat screen TV, a $300 gift certificate from Tiers of Elegance and door prizes.

The day is full and excitement and provides an excellent opportunity for brides to see everything available to them, Ater said.

“These shows are the only way you get direct access to the brides,” she said. During the event, “I just run, run, run, run.” And when it’s over?: “I collapse.”
