ATVs must follow rules in public parks

TERRE HAUTE — Conservation officers are using an all-terrain vehicle accident last weekend in Greene County to remind riders about safety and other regulations for operating ATVs.

Last Saturday, Billy J. Utt, 33, of Linton, was treated for back injuries after an accident at the Redbird State Recreation Area near Dugger. Riders at Redbird, which features a variety of off-road vehicle trails on reclaimed coal mine property, are required to wear helmets, something Utt was not doing at the time of his accident.

He was also operating an un-registered ATV with a suspended driver’s license, all of which are violations on state property, according to an Indiana DNR news release issued Friday.

The accident took place while Utt was attempting to climb Power Line Hill inside Redbird. According to Utt, his ATV stalled before cresting the hill, and he landed on his back.

The 1,400-acre Redbird State Recreation Area is named after the Redbird Coal Mine. It also offers fishing, hiking and mountain biking with future plans for picnic areas and more.

Indiana Conservation Officers encourage the public to be clear on the rules and regulations before operating an ATV. For more information about off-road vehicle laws, please visit the DNR website at www.in.gov/dnr.
