ILLINOIS PRIMARY: Repubs, Dems vie for party nominations

Seven seek Edgar Sheriff spot

TERRE HAUTE — Today is the primary election in Illinois, with polls in Clark and Edgar counties opening at 6 a.m. and closing at 7 p.m. Central Time.

The governor’s race is expected to generate interest statewide, while the Edgar County Sheriff’s race — with seven candidates — is expected to increase voter turnout in that county.

Illinois voters have a contested race for governor and lieutenant governor. Incumbent Gov. Pat Quinn and Lt. Gov. Paul Vallas are squaring off against Tio Hardiman and Brunell Donald on the Democratic ballot.

On the Republican ballot, the governor/lieutenant governor candidates are Bill Brady and Maria Rodriguez; Dan Rutherford and Steve Kim; Kirk W. Dillard and Jil Tracy; and Bruce Rauner and Evelyn Sanguinetti.

• Clark County has no contested races at the county level in the primary. Voters in Casey will decide whether or not to create a fire protection district.

Those who cast ballots in Clark County will use an optical scan voting system.

As of early Monday afternoon, 279 people had participated in early voting or submitted mail-in ballots, said Darlena Wallace, Clark County deputy clerk.

The county has more than 11,600 registered voters, and there are 15 polling places for the county’s 23 voting precincts.

This year marks the first time that 17-year olds in Illinois could register and vote in the primary election, if they will be 18 by the general election on Nov. 4.

• Meanwhile, Edgar County has a highly contested sheriff’s race generating much interest. Incumbent Sheriff Edward B. Motley faces Tom Dolan, Dennis Cary and Shane R. St. Clair on the Republican ballot, while Jeff D. Wood, Roger D. Hopper and Keith J. Kenney square off on the Democratic ballot for sheriff.

As of early Monday afternoon, 640 citizens had voted early or submitted mail-in ballots, said Terri Quinn, chief deputy clerk.

Edgar County, with 12,400 registered voters, has 10 voting centers and 29 precincts. Voters have their choice of paper ballot or touchscreen, Quinn said. “We accommodate all voters,” she said.
