Rose salutes service — its own and the community’s

TERRE HAUTE — Helping the community is a vital part of the educational process at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, according to students and staff of the top-ranked engineering school.

More than 1,500 students volunteered in some way to help community organizations during the 2012-13 academic year, said Kristen Loyd, assistant dean of student services. They volunteered more than 10,100 hours, worked on 108 projects and raised more than $42,600. And they gave 888 pints of blood to the Indiana Blood Center during four two-day campus blood drives.

“What an important impact this service has on students,” Loyd said. “It substantially impacts their academic development, live skills and their civic service. And they are more likely to remain involved in community service later in life.”

Loyd, student leader Sara Hensley and university president James C. Conwell highlighted the impact of community services and also thanked service club members for their many hours.

“If we can give back to another person, if I can help out one of my fellow students, that really means a lot to me,” said Hensley of her student involvement in community service.

During the most recent campaign for the United Way of the Wabash Valley, 43 percent of Rose-Hulman employees participated by donating more than $51,000.

“Our staff and faculty are incredibly involved in giving back to the community,” Conwell said.

Among the many ways that RHIT faculty, staff and students have been involved are as:

• Board members for Terre Haute hospitals

• Volunteer firefighters and EMS workers

• Bell ringers for the Salvation Army,

• Cooks for the 14th and Chestnut Community Center

• Youth sports coaches and mentors for Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts

• Volunteers for Indiana Special Olympics.

• Tutors and teachers in educational programs.

• Leaders in the United Way, library boards and Terre Haute Symphony board.

• Advisory board members and volunteers for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Vigo County

• Church leaders and advocates.

The students have also volunteered with 35 organizations in the Wabash Valley.
