Rose hosts event for staff member with pancreatic cancer

TERRE HAUTE — Delta Domination chanted about llamas and nerds and quadratic equations.

The RH Hoopsters demonstrated their basketball skills while three of the men’s group dress as cheerleaders with short shirts and pompons to the delight of the crowd.

The women’s basketball team demonstrated their own slam dunk contest.

Several groups rallied Saturday afternoon to support a beloved staff member at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in her continuing battle against pancreatic cancer.

Bretta Schriner, administrative assistant for the Office of Alumni Affairs and an adviser for the Rose-Hulman cheer team, said she was touched by the Stomp On Pancreatic Cancer event to raise funds and awareness.

“I think it’s been a very well-organized event,” Schriner said of the student-led fundraiser. “It’s funny and it’s for a great cause. It not only supports me, but cancer awareness as well.”

Schriner was diagnosed at age 25 with pancreatic cancer in December 2010. She had recently graduated from Ball State University, and had married husband Curt. By December 2013, she was declared cancer-free. But, this past February, she began to have medical complications, and doctors found that cancer had returned.

Saturday’s event was organized by students as well as the cheer team that Schriner coaches. Bretta and her husband Curt were judges for the contestants, who were scored on the five categories of creativity, visual appeal/well-rehearsed, crowd response and involvement, team spirit and enthusiasm, and incorporation of purple for pancreatic cancer.

In between the competitive performances, audience participation events included catching cotton balls on one’s nose, getting a cookie on a forehead into one’s mouth without using hands, keeping multiple balloons in the air, a shopping bag relay and an inchworm obstacle game.

“We got a lot of the activities off of ‘A Minute to Win It’,” said sophomore Kara Davis. “We wanted this to be a fun event. And we kind of want her to get things off her bucket list so this also was about raising funds for her.”

Freshman Wade Stallings of Indianapolis came out on top in the balloon contest.

“I came out today to support awareness of pancreatic cancer, and to show my support for Bretta Schriner,” Stallings said. “It’s for a good cause.”

Online donations are also being accepted to assist Schriner. Those donations can be made at www.You Enter Bretta Schriner into the search feature to pull up a donation page dedicated to her.
