10 men, 1 woman added to Fire Dept. ranks

TERRE HAUTE — Eleven recruits joined the ranks of the Terre Haute Fire Department on Monday during a swearing-in ceremony at Terre Haute City Hall.

Fire Chief Jeff Fisher and Mayor Duke Bennett welcomed the 10 men and one woman to the department. The new firefighters will be on probation for a year as they go through required training with the department. All must also become certified as paramedics within five years.

Fisher said the addition of the 11 will bring the department up to 147 firefighters, which includes 51 paramedics. The fire department will be up to full staff with the addition of the new hires, he said.

The hiring of the firefighters was made possible through a federal grant announced in January. Terre Haute received $1,537,010 for a Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grant through the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The SAFER grant program was created to increase the number of trained firefighters available to communities in need.

The 11 new firefighters are William Jon Holloway, Austin Michael Jacks, Trevor Eric Fenton Kelsheimer, Matthew David Arthur McCain, Diana Michelle Price, Lucas Kristofer Puckett, Charles Leo Reed, Garrett Scott Ryder, Matthew Joseph Salmon, Michael Dewayne Shelton and Elijah Albert Woodrow Turner.

Fisher said the city had applied for a SAFER grant twice before, but the third time was successful.
